If you live in southwest Montana, I recommend checking out The Gallatin Forest Partnership’s work on creating a management plan for the Madison and Gallatin Ranges. The partnership involves a diverse group of stakeholders— anglers and hunters, ranchers, mountain bikers, conservation groups like @greateryellowstone, among others. Their proposed plan seeks to preserve wilderness, maintain a healthy watershed, (very relevant to Bozeman residents), as well as balance the recreational opportunities these majestic mountain ranges offer. I work alone. Most writers do. This winter I spent many hours writing in solitude. While I largely enjoy solo time, loneliness does seep into the experience. My post for this month’s Salt & Ink details ways I’m learning to mitigate the social isolation often inherent in the writing lifestyle. Some are obvious - like get outside the office more - while others are more nuanced, like learning to create boundaries with the craft. Link to the post is in my profile. It’s felt great to get back on skis. I’ve missed the feeling of floating down a powder field and the physical burn of navigating churned snow. Bridger Bowl has changed quite a bit since we grew up playing here, but the views remain as spectacular as ever. Thanks for the great day, @jare_contraire!
To maintain a state of wonder: that is the trick. Right now I’m reading “Outside Ourselves” by Todd Burritt. I’ve known Todd since childhood; he was good friends with my brother. I remember watching them drill homemade climbing holds onto the walls of our home’s unfinished room. As a kid I thought they were freaks. Now I see the genius. Anyways, Todd’s book is a memoir about hiking through the Greater Yellowstone. It’s an exploration of the history and geology of this region, as well as the meaning of wilderness. Here’s my favorite quote so far: “And caring is pivotal to how we see the world around us; to whether we see it at all. When you size up a handhold because you’re going to hang your weight off of it, or take time to key out a new type of moss, or generally just feel invested in planet Earth because it’s the only planet you’re going to get, caring creates meaning. And meaning might be the most endangered resource of them all.” A link to buy Todd’s book is my in my profile. He’s a local author, not on any social media. One of the distinguishing traits of the fantasy genre is, of course, magic. Magic is defined as "the power of influencing a course of action through mysterious forces." When I was crafting the magic system in my book, I looked to history. Many themes bridge the myths, folklore, and mystical spiritual practices across space and time. The common belief in plants' magical powers captivated me the most and played an increasingly important role in my work. While magic often influences the plot of a fantasy book, I am more fascinated with how the characters relate to it and how it shapes themes like power and oppression. With plant magic, human-nature relationships becomes even more dynamic as the characters ask themselves, what are the benefits and consequences of manipulating the natural world? A question I believe is front and center today. 📸 @speedcoachingandcreative

To start, feminine strength. Over the last five years, I’ve explored this concept across genres and platforms, most visibly with the Work Behind the Body series. While these interviews with female athletes often highlighted the physical prowess women embody, I also know our strength, as women and as humans in general, isn’t limited to the metaphorical sword. Historically, being strong often meant being emotionally stoic. Emotions were a women’s folly, and those who expressed raw feelings were often called crazy or overly sensitive. We see this changing for the better. Emotional intelligence grows as a celebrated concept, one encouraged in the youth. Not always, but more so. The rose offers its own strength, and not just in its thorns. To feel, to love, to empathize: these strengths win wars by their potential to prevent them altogether. @speedcoachingandcreative with this fantastical photo. ❤️️🌹🗡
